Welcome to the Institute of Computer Engineering

Great to have you here! At the Institute of Computer Engineering of the University of Lübeck we build the computers of tomorrow: from a single chip to connected systems. Led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Mladen Berekovic, we design, build and test hardware and software that achieve more together: faster, more efficient and more secure.

Our research

Rethinking computing, from the transistor to the application. We explore how hardware and software work together, and we take our ideas all the way to a working prototype.

  • Embedded systems and chip design: hardware and software designed together, from the processor to the finished chip.
  • Secure and dependable computers: systems that keep working correctly despite faults and attacks.
  • Computing beyond Moore's law: new architectures for when smaller transistors alone are no longer enough.
  • Artificial intelligence right on the device: edge AI, fast and efficient, right where the data is created.

In projects with partners

In national and European joint projects we work with partners from science and industry.

We work, for example, on

  • open RISC-V processors,
  • cryptography for the age of quantum computers and
  • resilient communication for industry.

Studying and teaching

Behind all this is an international team from computer science, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering, and we love to share what we know: the ITI teaches the foundations of computer engineering in the Computer Science, Medical Informatics and Medical Engineering Science programmes and the application subject Robotics and Automation, plus lectures, seminars and lab courses straight from our current research.
